Day 20, or For Better Things
For a follower of Christ, it is easy to forget what it is that we are striving for. It’s easy to lose sight of the intangible rewards we hope to attain, the impalpable paradise we pray to reach. We put one foot in front of the other, we go through the motions without real conviction of our reasons.
Believing without seeing is the foundation of faith. There is a choice, a commitment, a leap one needs to make in order to call oneself a believer. Often we start out with great passion for this faith, knowing that it is the only truth. But the longer we go on without seeing what awaits us, the more we turn to material things, which, though we can feel and see them now, decay and disappear in a blink of an eye. Yet we never stop putting our faith in these things, no matter how many times we learn of their frailty.
But still we know, within ourselves, that the realest, truest, most infinite things, the things we set out for, are the only things that can satisfy our wandering hearts. We feel a home calling to us, a voice guiding us, a hand pulling us along. And it is no less real than anything on the earth. If we are to keep this always present in our minds and hearts, we must lift our eyes up out of the mire of this world, towards the true life we were born to live.
1 Peter 1:3-9 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and to an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Without having seen him you love him; though you do not now see him you believe in him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the outcome of your faith you obtain the salvation of your souls.
My prayer for today:
Lord, when my head is turned by mere mirages, remind me of Your living water that is the true reward.
