40 Days, 40 Prayers

Day 3, or Jekyll and Hyde

Sometimes I feel like there are two people living inside me. The one who is kind, giving, and peaceful, and the one who is vicious, selfish, and spiteful. The one who won’t get mad at anyone for anything, and the one who can turn a disagreement into a war between good and evil. The one who can’t remember her password for anything, but gets angry about a conversation from years ago as if it were this morning.

The classic angel with a halo and red-horned devil sitting on our shoulders is something we associate with cartoons, a silly illustration. But I don’t think it’s so exaggerated.

There are two natures lying in wait in all of us. Every day, every moment, they are vying for our favor. And the decision lies with us which we give a voice to. Day by day, moment by moment, we decide who we will be.

My prayer for today:

Heavenly Father, You made us all with our own strengths and weaknesses, and because You love us, You gave us free will to choose our own actions. Give us the wisdom and discernment to choose, in every moment, our better selves, the version of ourselves You created us to be.

Amen.
