30 Days of Writing Prompts, Part 28

Prompt #28: What popular notion do you think the world has most wrong?

The world has an awful lot of wrong notions. It always has, but the world seems particularly twisted in our time.

But I think one of the most disturbing is the epidemic of moral relativism. Relativism is, in my mind, the plague of the century. It bleeds into every aspect of our culture and society. And what it really translates to is a very extreme and “disguised” form of selfishness and arrogance.

It’s my body. You can’t tell me what to do with my body.

If it feels good, do it.

Who’s to say what’s right? Every individual decides for himself what’s right for him.

The whole thing turns into a massive, swirling storm of “philosophical” debate over subjectivism vs. objectivism, but you know what the whole thing really is?  Excuses. And trust me, I know excuses.  Right is right, and wrong is wrong, and pretending you don’t know right from wrong is juvenile.

“Is that what you’re supposed to be doing?” we ask a kid every day at the pre-school I work for.

“Yes,” the rule-breaking child answers.
