30 Days of Writing Prompts, Parts 22 and 23

Prompt #22: Describe 3 significant memories from your childhood.

I remember when I was  very small, no more than five, every night I would wake up and be terrified of the monsters. So I would call out for my parents and my dad would shortly appear, coming up the stairs and sitting on the top step so that I could climb on his back. Then he’d piggyback me downstairs and my parents let me sleep in their room. And my mom sang me to sleep with the ballads I love to this day.

I remember going to my aunt and uncle’s cabin in the summers. My dad’s whole family would go on a Sunday. The uncles cooked hot dogs and hamburgers over the campfire and the aunts made side dishes. All the cousins would take trips to the creek. We’d catch crickets and grasshoppers. When we were young, it felt like such an adventure.

I remember every day being filled with wonder and curiosity. Learning new things in school and playing with my brothers, making up games and stories with an endless supply of imagination occupied my time and shaped who I am.

Prompt #23: List your top 5 hobbies and why you love them.

Only 5? Really? Fine.

1. Singiiiiiing!! I put this one first because it’s the one I do ALL THE TIME. I sing all day every day. The same songs over and over until I learn a new set of songs to sing over and over. When I get sick and can’t sing it drives me crazy and I feel like something’s missing. It just comes naturally.

2. Writing. I guess that’s not really a hobby, more like a need, but I don’t do it full time. Writing is incredible. It’s like magic.  Torturous, torturous magic.

3. Reading. Much like writing, reading is magical. I don’t read nearly as much as I used to, which is unfortunate, but I still love it, because “there is no frigate like a book to take us lands away…how frugal is the chariot that bears the human soul!”

4. Dancing. It’s good for the body, and the soul! *cheesy thumbs up.* Really though, it’s good artistic expression, good exercise, and good socialisation.

5. Sewing. (And stuff like that.) I’ve been doing a lot less sewing lately as well, ever since my machine had a tantrum and three needles broke in as many uses. I prefer hand sewing anyway, but I just haven’t had the gumption to start any projects. But I still love it in my heart, because it’s so useful and fun to create something out of nothing. I also recently learned how to crochet, and I was instantly addicted. A length of yarn, a hook, and some simple stitches that turn into something awesome to wear or a work of art? Yes, please! Everyone I know is getting something made out of yarn for Christmas this year. (As long as I’m on the subject, I’m gonna shamelessly mention for anyone who knows me personally, if you know of anyone getting rid of yarn, I would be grateful to have it!)

There are a lot more things I like to do, and it was hard to pick a top five, and I’m not sure I got it right. But I can only do my best. Now I’m gonna go do one of my other favorite hobbies-watching t.v.!
